Abstract
This hands-on workshop introduces participants to AI-assisted computer architecture learning and exploration gem5 simulator. The workshop focuses on how Large Language Models (LLMs) can be combined with a computer architecture simulator to help learners understand complex architectural concepts through progressive problem generation, code execution, simulation, performance analysis, and scaffolding.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand the basic workflow and installation of the gem5 simulator.
- Prepare, load, and execute code in gem5.
- Explore system-level parameters produced by the simulator.
- Analyze pipeline hazards.
- Explore the cache memory hierarchy.
- Use AI-assisted scaffolding to support problem-solving.

Biography

Dr. Tauhidur Rahman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Florida International University (FIU). He obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the University of Florida in 2017 (advised by Dr. Mark Tehranipoor). He is the recipient of NSF CRII and the director of the SeRLoP (Security, Reliability, Low-power, and Privacy) Research lab. His research interests include hardware security and trust, side-channel analysis, and embedded security. His research is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Security Agency (NSA), the Department of Defense (DoD), and CyberFlorida.
Sagor Chandro Bakchy, is a Ph.D. student in the SeRLoP (Security, Reliability, Low-power, and Privacy) Research Lab at Florida International University (FIU). His research interests lie at the intersection of security, privacy, machine learning (ML), and large language models (LLMs), with a particular emphasis on developing intelligent and secure computing systems. His current research explores the application of AI and LLM-based techniques to computer architecture, hardware security, and educational technologies. He is actively involved in developing AI-driven solutions for analyzing complex hardware and architectural concepts, with the goal of improving system security, reliability, and learning outcomes. His previous work includes applying AI/ML techniques to cybersecurity, medical diagnosis, sentiment analysis, and human body movement detection.
